He was the manager of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, saving them from relegation in his first year and winning the League One in his second (2010-11 season); he was then named manager of the year and the team were promoted to the Football League Championship. The team finished in 10th place in their first year in the Championship and 4th place in the second, playing the promotional playoff game, which they lost against Crystal Palace – the team that ended up winning the final and being promoted to the Premier League. A playing style based on possession of the ball was created, which the team were known for in England.
