New Chapter: “It’s an Honor to Lead Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors”

Today, I want to share the excitement I feel in announcing my new role as head coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Leading one of the most prestigious clubs in the K-League is a unique opportunity and a challenge I embrace with pride and commitment.

Football has always been a passion that has taken me around the world, both as a player and a coach. From my early days with renowned European teams like Chelsea and Tottenham to my time managing the Greek national team, I’ve learned that success in football is not just about strategy but also about communication, trust, and teamwork.

At this stage, I begin my second experience in Asian football following my stint with Shanghai Shenhua. I am confident that, together with the players, the coaching staff, and the loyal supporters of Jeonbuk Hyundai, we can work to restore the team to its rightful place: being the best club in the K-League and competing at the highest level in international tournaments such as the AFC Champions League.

A Visionary Project for the Future

I am grateful to the club and its General Manager, Lee Do-hyeon, for trusting in my leadership and football vision. I know this was not an easy decision, given the caliber of local and international candidates who aspired to the role. However, the shared commitment to the long-term development of the team was key to reaching this agreement.

I am excited to work with a coaching staff I know well. Joining me will be Mauricio Taricco (with whom I’ve worked side by side for 15 years) and Voulgaris Panagiotis, as well as my son Diego Poyet as an assistant. Additionally, we will have the support of local coaches like Jung Jo-gook and Hwang Hee-hoon to ensure a seamless integration of different football cultures.

My management style will remain focused on creating a positive environment where players can grow and perform at their best. I believe in flexible tactics that adapt to the team’s strengths and in the power of communication to foster a sense of unity.

A New Era for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

On December 24, my appointment as the ninth permanent coach in the club’s history was made official. This position represents a new chapter for both me and Jeonbuk. Our first challenge will be on February 13, 2025, when we face Port FC in the AFC Champions League Two.

I know there will be many challenges, but the opportunities are just as abundant. I will work tirelessly to meet the expectations of the fans and the club, who see in me a leader with global experience.

I want to thank the supporters of Jeonbuk Hyundai in advance for their patience and support. I am convinced that together we can achieve great things. My commitment is total, and I am ready to take on this challenge with determination and passion.

Thank you for joining me on this exciting journey. Let’s go, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors!
